COVID-19 : Sick Notes & Sick Pay

Updated guidance from the Government is that if you have symptoms, you should self-isolate for 7 days from when the symptoms started. Those that need medical advice are advised to contact NHS 111 rather than visiting their doctor. This is likely to result in more staff claiming SSP.

SSP is now available for individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 or those who are unable to work because they are self isolating in line with Government advice. SSP will now be payable from day 1 instead of day 4 for affected individuals and businesses can claim back SSP for up to 14 days.

If required, those who are advised to self-isolate will be able to obtain an alternative to the sick note to cover this by contacting NHS 111 and obtaining an online sick note. This can be used by employees where their employers require evidence. However, employers are being asked to be flexible and pragmatic at this time and only require a sick note where absolutely necessary. Therefore, it is likely that you will not be receiving sick notes from those off with COVID-19 or those in self-isolation.

This is only for COVID-19 – all other illnesses or injuries remain as per normal.
